mutantfilm is an artist run production company founded by artist and filmmaker Pete Gomes in 1997.

In 2010, "PD" or "PrEditor" is current media slang for a combined Producer-Director-Editor.

PD's are individual or small crews working with minimal but high quality equipment producing film and television broadcast standard video and all types of cross platform work on full HD.

Recent video works include commissions from: Performa 09, Beaconsfield Gallery, Cornershop, English Touring Opera, Arts Council England, Trinity-Laban and Channel Four

mutantfilm is flexible and expands and adapts for each project, customising for each specific film with additional equipment from our high quality base of:

Sony EX1 High Defintion Camera, Mac laptop, Shot gun mics, Radio mics and Digital sound recorders and full HD Final Cut Pro edit suite.

Some jobs require more cameras and more people, others might need a more experimental approach and more time. Sometimes, people want some sort of film, but don't know exactly what it is. Sometimes people know what needs to be filmed but have no idea how to do it. Each new video work is custom designed and directed to suit the specific individual needs of the work.

The approach at mutantfilm is distinct from more formal production outfits as I am a working and practicing artist and film maker.

The aim is to work along side other creative people who need moving images for all forms of documentation and presentation and who need a distinct approach that is sensitive to their subjects, artists and audiences. Projects often need comprehensive and usable video documentation and 'advocacy documents', now critical for arts organisation to present what they are doing to an international audience via the internet. The aim is to offer a high quality broadcast standard product that will remain useful and become integral to any forthcoming strategies utlising internet video channels and other forms of specialist audio visual broadcasting.

As an artist, I have collaborated with film makers, choreographers, opera directors, musicians, sound artists, composers, architects, media artists, painters, directing film and video work, commissioned by a wide range of arts organisations: Arts Council England, British Council, English Touring Opera, South Bank Centre, Thames Festival, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, Greenwich and Docklands International Festival, Performa 09, European Union, The London Institute, Laban Centre, Trinity College of Music, Southwark Council and others.

Stills from " John Wynne's 'Soundtrap' at Beaconsfield Gallery" 2010

My open starting point allows for a complete freedom and exploration of visual possibilities for each film. The visual style will be distinct for each project and sensitive to the specific needs of the works and projects; ranging from formal a documentary with interviews to an impressionistic poetic film or a combination of the two.

mutantfilm aims to apply creative ideas and produce film and video for other creative people.

Current work includes: John Wynne, Dominique Gonzalez Foerster and PERFORMA.

Some recent commissions

This is a recent video for the London based art group Furtherfield. Having a complex practice that involves developing social networks, Furthefield required a succinct over view and introduction to what they do, in a video that was accessible, dynamic and engaging.

Taster for the forthcoming film 'Performa 09: Provoking the Future' filmed in New York in 2009. This short taster shows some of the wide range of artists and diverse styles of live work I have recently filmed during the intense 3 week biennial that is Performa. All interviews were conducted by Pete Gomes.

A commission by Beaconsfield Gallery and John Wynne for his show "Installation for 300 speakers, piano player, and vacuum cleaner". This was a bespoke video which documents the gallery space, the installation and the architectural setting. The pace of the video was specifically slow to mirror the physical experience of the installation. John Wynne was specific about not wanting interviews or explanation in the film.

The titling was specifically done for an enhanced CD.

A second commission by Beaconsfield Gallery and John Wynne for his show "Installation for 300 speakers, piano player, and vacuum cleaner". For this video John Wynne asked for a documentation of the installation that became a piece of work in its own right. This was a bespoke video which documents the installation using split screen and interval time lapse over 2 months. This video was included at Beaconsfield Gallery as part of the show. The titling was specifically done for an enhanced CD.
