"I am not afraid... [2004]

Directed by Pete Gomes Editing, Camera, Animation by Pete Gomes Super 8 and Computer Music: Momenti Luciano Berio Film Commission for South Bank Centre and the Berio Lounge as part of ‘Omaggio: a Celebration of Luciano Berio’.

"I am not afraid... interprets a Berio electronic score, which uses stereo extensively, as part of the composition. The images are synchronised to both the left and right ear and so watching the film reveals more detail and structure within the electronic music.

The film uses hand drawn animation on 8mm film, which was projected, re-filmed on 8mm, using an adapted lens device and edited on computer.

The title is a quote from Berio's last interview in 2003, and is intended not have a closing quotation mark, as the full quote is closed as the end of the film. The film and the music become a part of the meaning and expression of the quotation.

" I am not afraid... there are deep solid roots in what we do which cannot be changed or destroyed." Luciano Berio 2003

I was given the opportunity to work with any piece of music with kind permission. By pure chance, I stumbled on a second hand vinyl copy of experimental 1960's music of which Momenti was on it. I selected one small section from the composition and set it to music.

The film is an intricate exploration of visual music. Filmed on very unusual and very fast 800ASA Super 8 Negative film, it utilised re filming of hand drawn and coloured sequences, which involved removal and manipulation of film emlusion. This was projected and refilmed, using my favoured Sankyo XL 620 Supertronic camera, which then allowed me additional in camera effects, timelapse and in camera manipulations.

The Super 8 negative was then telecined, and the the rest of the work was done on computer. The film, for me, pays a homage to the work of Jordan Belson, and the Film Excercises 1-5 by John and James Whitney.
