Mutant Manifesto [2003]

This is a live performance film. Performed twice: at Architectural Association [2000] and Whitechapel Art Gallery, [2003] as part of a retrospective of 5 films exploring architecture and space (Scape/Sensory/Cycle/Summer of Lo[ve]ss] in conjunction with 'Mies in Berlin'.

Mutant Manifesto was made during my film and intermedia teaching at the Architectural Association [1999-2005], it states 20 'rules' about how to make films about architecture.

Each rule is spoken aloud by myself, against a video projected back drop which displays images and music as a counterpoint.

The film opens with Rule No.1 "Always honour the architects intentions" and images and sound begin with Mies Van Der Rohe's Barcelona Pavillion set to the music of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons.

... by Rule 20 a crazed dinosaur is demolishing the Houses of Parliament, while a mix of Fats Waller, Miles Davis and Shostakovich slug it out, as I attempt to assert authority over the increasingly chaotic proceedings.
