mutantfilm is a site that houses the work of Pete Gomes and other collaborative audio visual projects and experiments.

mutant film came about as a necessity, to describe new ways of working wth audio visual media in conjunction with technology.

mutantfilm is rooted within the language of film, celluloid, cinema and experimental cinema, conceptually expanding from the film language of the 20th Century, but operating within the landscape of the internet, wireless technologies, databases, computer editing, portable computers and on coming technologies.

Most recent work including the recent drawing works and a presentation and drawing for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam is not yet on line.

Film work includes:

My 2002-3 touring film commission Hinterland and Phantasmaton for the Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company has toured the UK for he second time , including the Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank, The Place and across Europe and was a collaboration with Shobana Jeyasingh, composer Jocelyn Pook, singer Natacha Atlas and designer, Joanna Parker, who's recent work included Theatre de Complicte's “Noise of Time” , and composer Donnacha Dennhey.

My screened films to date offer a diverse palette of styles and ideas, which inform the visual style of my forthcoming feature length film 4ps — a non linear exploration of four characters, each playing a psychological archetype. 4ps is filmed over the period of one year, and explores technology dreaming and death.

I work as a freelance Director and also lecture on Digital Film and Intermedia as part of Communications at the Architectural Association in London.

I formerly held a Gulbenkian New Technologies Research Post at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London in 1996-98, where I formulated ideas and strategies which helped establish the ICA New Media Centre alongside creating the earliest ICA web sites. I was a supporter and presence within the now 'legendary London net lounge' Backspace. :-)

I have collaborated and instigated on numerous digital, film, art and technology projects across the UK and Europe many of which fuse elements of new technologies and film.

My recent work returns to a narrative film form of my early work, based on writing, working with actors and exploring new cinematic forms and structures.

I have been greatly influenced by 1960's and1970's Cybernetic and Expanded Cinema and consider myself an offspring from the period, which generated the first pioneers of computer film making.

My work champions a revival of this ideology, exploring structures and concepts for new forms of 'narrative' film making and new ways of affecting the viewer in and outside the exisiting cinematic environment.

This approach resulted in a series of mandalic films, which were shown in 1999 as part of Leeds International Film Festival and an early article on Computer Film for the magazine Filmwaves.

Technically I use combinations digital and analogue techniques – computer programming, complex use of lenses and filters, alongside traditional film techniques and methods.

One recent work Sensory —an audio-visual environment for DVD with surround sound, was the first DVD to be screened at the ICA in 1999, and was in full Dolby Digital suround sound, as part of 'Show and Tell'.

Sensory became a springboard for current work which begins to formulate a cinema based on non linearity and what I term 'parallel narrative', combining cutting edge technologies with new film forms.

I have published numerous articles on film theory, architecture, design, psychology and new technologies.
