WORKS

"Here, here and ..here" (2003)

[Duration 40 mins DV Cam]

A 40 minute performance/drawing at the ICA in in London.

The piece was made prior to, and was part of, a lecture on "Locative Media and Performance".

"Here, here and ..here" used a GPS to globally position the ICA and drew the information from the GPS screen onto the pavement in white chalk - mapping the ICA using 3D GPS Location and coordinates.

On either side of the drawn GPS screen are two other sections drawn in dotted lines. These show the variations of the coordinates on either side of the doorway, which suggest the infinite and ongoing grid of coordinates beyond this location.

The screen and drawing included; numbered satellites; position of satelites; accuracy; elevation; along with bars to show satellite strength, and a date, and time.

The seconds on the time, were the last thing to be written – giving a precise time, using an atomic clock, to mark the conclusion of the piece.

PARK BENCH TV (2003)

http://www.parkbenchtv.org

Making of the worlds first terraportal in Bedford Square.

parkbenchtv.org centres around a single park bench in central London.

The bench itself is used widely in the area all throughout the year, but dependent on the severity of the British weather. It is used by local workers and residents, but also by tourists and passers by, for reading, eating lunch, and pausing during the day.

The park bench along with some outline instructions about access to the node acts as signage. The bench itself was in need of repair and we replaced and fixed the seating, and included some information, including the web address about the project and simple information about the nearby access point. This is all on a new oak plank of wood.

This was carved using a computer numerically controlled router - carving information including GPS co ordinates directly onto a new oak bench plank.

This forms a new focal point for a local community alerting them to the fact that the bench now rests within a specifically created Wi-Fi zone. The bench becomes the symbol of the physical node, visible regeneration and gives access and awareness to the node which is otherwise invisible to passers by, those from outside the area and those who are unaware of it.

WORK, PLACE. (2002)

[Two camera, spilt screen Duration 40 mins DV Cam]

http://www.aaschool.ac.uk/antennaa/workplace/

A wireless action and public artwork, examining work, technology, leisure, psychology, location and architecture.

This work and its press coverage in The Guardian newspaper in London widely acknowldeged as the first inspiration for what became known as Warchalking.

The early mapping projects from November 2001 are the true starting point for this, along with the influence from the early work of Heath Bunting.

ANTENNAA (2001)

http://www.aaschool.ac.uk/antennaa

As part of AA Communications in conjunction with the Architectural Association. This was an exploration of wireless technology in relation to architecture.

Working with Consume in London, this project installed the first stage of an ongoing project by puttng a Wi Fi antenna on the roof of the Architectural Association in London.

The project include making hand built directional antennas, using drainpipe and copper wire. These were used for the other projects that followed. They were designed by Aljosa Blinov

In order to understand the signal and where it was going in an outisde environment, we started to map the signal using chalk on the floor, walls and street furniture.

Mapping the signal with chalk on the pavement in November 2001 is the earliest practise of what latterly became known as warchalking.
